Here's a rare track that Brotherhood wrote and were playing live prior to breaking up. Never recorded in a proper studio, this live version comes from the This Is My World compilation cassette on Excursion Records.

Nope, not the band that released a seven inch as the first release on Victory Records. This is where Northwest Hardcore bridges the gap between False Liberty and the mighty Brotherhood. Where False Liberty were running with a hardcore punk sound, Inner Strength sees Greg and Vic taking more melodic cues more from DC Revolution Summer bands like Dag Nasty and Ignition. Also of note for the melody department is that Inner Strength featured Wade Neal on guitar for a stretch about a year before the formation of Seaweed.

This is a full soundboard recording from 10/30/87 at the World Community Theater in Tacoma, WA. Seattle was in the throes of their Teen Dance Ordinance years, which resulted in a severe lack of all ages shows for the city, and send many shows south to Tacoma and Olympia.

Diddly Squat were a mid 80s hardcore band from Tri Cities, WA.  Over their brief tenure, they released two demos and a 7".  They could draw comparisons to the likes of Crucifucks, Subhumans (Canada), The Freeze and other contemporaries of their day, but there's also a major crossover vibe happening with the guitar work.

Diddly Squat most famously featured a young Nate Mendel prior to joining the likes of Brotherhood, Galleons Lap, Christ On A Crutch, Sunny Day Real Estate and Foo Fighters throughout his time with the bass.  Drummer, Eric Akre, also went onto spend time in Galleons Lap, Christ On A Crutch and Treepeople.
Unfortunately, in 1988, guitar player Jason Cobb drowned in the Columbia River, which brought an abrupt end to the band just a day before what would have been their final show.

Here is their full No Questions demo from 1987.  Four of these songs were also released as the self titled 7" on Kil-Tel Records, but this demo has nine tracks total.

When Unrestrained played Spokane, WA a few weeks ago, Ron Brotherhood gave me a handful of tapes for conversion.  Among the stack were a few Brotherhood recordings that have never been heard by the public at large.

First up is a soundboard recording from 4/1/89 in Spokane at 123 Arts.  I'm not sure of all the band that the show consisted of, but Ron does mention Christ On A Crutch, so it had to be a banger!

Next up are two rehearsal recordings from 1988.  They are listed as rehearsals numbers 9 and 10, and judging by the date on another Brotherhood rehearsal tape that I have, this should place them around November or December of 1988.
Both rehearsals are in one download, but they extract to two separate folders.

Galleons Lap are famous for being the post-hardcore project of Greg Anderson (Brotherhood, Statement, Engine Kid, Sunn, Southern Lord Records) upon moving back to Seattle from a brief stint in San Diego.  The band also featured Nate Mendel (Brotherhood, Christ On A Crutch, Diddly Squat, Sunny Day Real Estate, Foo Fighters), Eric Akre (Christ On A Crutch, Diddly Squat) and Lenny Richardson.  This is much more mellow than the bands the members had previously been in, but it still maintains their punk leanings when necessary.  Themes & Variations initially came out as a self released cassette and then was pressed to 12" by Scorch Records.

Hateful Youth - 5/17/87 in Spokane, WA with DRI.

In recent times, I've gotten to know Ron Guardipee a bit and he has been kind enough to send me some tapes for mp3 conversion.  Over time, some of these tapes will be pre-Brotherhood, thus showcasing the genesis of what would become the straight edge scene in the Pacific Northwest.

For a period of a few years in the mid 1980s, Ron moved to Spokane, WA and sang for a band called Hateful Youth from 86-87 before moving back to Seattle and joining Brotherhood on vocals.  You can definitely hear a big crossover vibe with this recording that could be likened to Cryptic Slaughter and The Accused.  With seven tracks totaling nine minutes, there are some total ragers.
