Here's a rare track that Brotherhood wrote and were playing live prior to breaking up. Never recorded in a proper studio, this live version comes from the This Is My World compilation cassette on Excursion Records.

Let me start this post by stating that I cannot possibly express enough just how much of an unsung gem this 7" is, but especially in the realm of Northwest Hardcore in the 1990s. It has a dirty, visceral rage to it that not all bands are able to capture.

Nothing Left existed for a brief period of time during the stretch of 1995 - 1996, and could practically be called more of a collective than a band. Featuring members that either came from or would go onto the likes of: Undertow, Balance of The World, Dead Skin Mask, Nineironspitfire, Pretty Girls Make Graves, Kiss It Goodbye and more, Nothing Left felt like they came and went in the blink of an eye, but at least they left behind this sole seven track 7" as a testament to the changing times around them. The track, Common Ground, is actually a re-recorded version that originally appeared on the Balance Of The World - s/t 10" a few years earlier.

There was a good amount of metallic hardcore being churned out of the Northwest in the late 90s, but Mourn The Sun were one of the few bands that were really bringing elements of serious metal into the hardcore scene.

In late1998, their singer, Myron, left the band, and I believe moved to California. He was briefly replaced by Fenny Perez, who came out of San Jose, CA and the band Cathy Ames. Unfortunately, Mourn The Sun didn't last all that long. They called it a day after their bass player, Tyler Hook, passed away in, I believe, early1999.

In the download below is their 4 song demo tape from 1998, and a small collection of unreleased tracks. The first unreleased song was actually pre-demo and was intended to be part of a comp on Dead End Records. The other two unreleased tracks feature Fenny on vocals, and were recorded in late 1998 at the Art Institute in one take.

Tacoma's Safe And Sound will be releasing a new 7", Embers Still Remain, shortly via Life To Live Records and Assault Records. They've been flying the flag of vegan straight edge in the Northwest for some time now, and have no signs of slowing down, as they plan to tour the full US in March and hope to hit Europe by year's end.

They just put out a video for the track "Dream" that can be seen below. If you're into the likes of One King Down, Burn and early era Morning Again, check it out.

Nope, not the band that released a seven inch as the first release on Victory Records. This is where Northwest Hardcore bridges the gap between False Liberty and the mighty Brotherhood. Where False Liberty were running with a hardcore punk sound, Inner Strength sees Greg and Vic taking more melodic cues more from DC Revolution Summer bands like Dag Nasty and Ignition. Also of note for the melody department is that Inner Strength featured Wade Neal on guitar for a stretch about a year before the formation of Seaweed.

This is a full soundboard recording from 10/30/87 at the World Community Theater in Tacoma, WA. Seattle was in the throes of their Teen Dance Ordinance years, which resulted in a severe lack of all ages shows for the city, and send many shows south to Tacoma and Olympia.

Now that a scanner has entered my household again, more diverse content should start rolling back to the site, and what better way to kick off during the holidays than with the Excursion Wishbook from 1992? Well concealed cash, or money orders only!

As a bonus, here's a one page ad for Overkill, Incision and Excursion Records from 1994.

Here's a full set of Undertow at Nappy Dugout in Vanvouver, BC back on 12/13/92. Once again, filmed by Ron Guardipee with his hi8 camera.

After converting the video, I remembered seeing some pictures from this very show on DCXX a couple of years ago, and they had sourced these from Tom Holcomb.
Edit: I was also just informed that the cover photo for the Stalemate 7" was also taken at this show, and some outtakes can be found on the website of Dave Larson's great podcast, Nobody's Nose.

Just converted a nice, early set of Strain from 12/11/92 in Vancouver, BC at South Wall, which was above the Mickey MacDougall Arena. This was a year after their demo, but still almost two years before their s/t EP on Overkill.

Another gem from the DAT archive of Ron Brotherhood, here's Undertow's 1990 demo.  Joel was still on vocals, and they had really stepped up their game from the Refuse demo a year prior.

Remastered from the master DAT tape, and sounding much better than the Lost & Found bootleg.

I pulled out a VHS last night of a smaller Northwest Hardcore show that happened at Stage 4 Theater in Portland back on 3/20/98.  On tape were Last Man Standing, Backside Disaster and Left With Nothing.

Looking back, the early days of Harkonen seems like a wild ride.  Although they became well known as a three piece associated with Hydra Head Records, between 1996 and 1999, Harkonen had a multitude of lineup changes that saw various singers and guitar players come and go.  Due to familial relations, this was also the period of time where it wasn't uncommon to hear someone refer to Harkonen as "baby Botch".

Recorded in October of 1996 at Uptone Studios, this demo isn't really lacking anything in the sound department, and is a great representation of Harkonen at their earliest.

Here's some video of Undertow and Shelter playing inside Bill Baker's garage in Bellingham, WA on 9/14/90.  For those that don't know, Bill sang for Jayhawker, and ran Incision Records for a short period of time, putting out the original version of Ringworm - The Promise.

The videos are both really choppy, perhaps due to the age of the VHS tape, but the audio for both sets are well intact, and well worth watching just for the rare glimpse of Undertow with Joel on vocals and John on bass.

Sparkmarker hailed from Vancouver, BC from 1990 - 1997 and often played alongside the likes of other NWHC greats like Strain and Undertow.  In 1992, they recorded three tracks with Don Fury that became the Plug 7" on Selfless Records.  Those same three songs also appear on a self released cassette under the same title, but with three soundboard quality live tracks on the b-side, and here is a rip of that cassette.

Straight from the band announcement:

We (Unrestrained) have traditionally held full time jobs to fund our passion filled pursuit of recording hardcore records since we were teenagers, but it's 2013 and that shit is for the birds, so now we're going to crowdsource all future endeavors.
