11/25/95 at the Showcase Theater in Corona, CA was both Mean Season's final show (I wish I had video of it), and Unbroken's next to last show, as they would play one more in San Diego the following night. I had two videos of this set, and one had much better sound and picture quality than the other, but the superior video was also missing the first song, so I just compiled the two together.

If you're anything like me, I like to find out every minute detail about my favorite bands. One thing that had eluded me for years was the story behind the Unbroken t-shirt "Winter Tour 94/95 With Barry". If this is your first time laying eyes on this tee, well here's the specs.
This was offererd in navy blue as well as a rust orange (pretty sure those were the only two) and features the band logo on the front with the a live photo of what looks like the late Eric Allen (Rob or Steve if you're reading this and I'm wrong, let me know so I can fix it). Nice color combo with the navy and the grey ink.
Since my curiousity had finally gotten the best of me, I shot Steven Miller (guitar) a message to find out just who Barry was/is. Here's his response:
"Hi Chip! This is an easy one. Barry is a great friend of ours who was the drummer of Amenity, House of Suffering and the original drummer in Kill Holiday. We took him on that tour with us so we thought it would be cool to have him be more a part of things that just a "roadie" for lack of a better term."

Going through my old videos has been great. Over the coming months, a bunch of awesome full sets will be posted, and today it's Unbroken at a VFW Hall in Bordertown, NJ on 7/10/94. It's hard to say that this is truly the full set, though, because after a half stack comes tumbling down, there's a cut in the video, but this is the full video that exists of that set.

We received a message from Rich Hall, the man behind 1000 Knives Booking, letting us know that Damnation AD has been added to the Unbroken show in NYC next weekend. Burning Love had to drop so Damnation has been added in their place. The show has been sold out for quite some time but if you have tickets, it's going to be a good one.
While you're at it, head on over and check out Rich's 1000 Knives Tshirts that he has for sale. Most of you know him already but for those who don't, Rich runs 1000 Knives Booking. He's been booking shows for years and is bringing Unbroken to NYC next weekend so help the man out and pick up a tshirt.
You can place your order by clicking here: 1000 Knives Tshirts.

Posted by xCHIPxSEM | File under : One King Down, Start A Fire Records, Take It Back Records, Unbroken, Unveil, Where Eagles Dare
I'd heard Unveil's first record, "Destruction Wherever I Go", I'd say last year and I was into it. I thought the band had a lot of potential and was off to go a great start. Last month, Chris (vocals) emailed me asking I would do a review if he sent me a copy of their newest release, "Hypnopaedia". Of course, I said I would so here we are.
The band plays chug style hardcore with some fast parts thrown in there. Lots of melody to go over the hard chugging riffs. The first band that I think of when I'm listening to them is early One King Down, also some Unbroken (not so much the Life Love Regret era). The b
and makes no attempt to hide their love for 90s hardcore but still tips its hat to the newer generation of bands currently playing out. The recording is extremely clean and nothing over powers. Vocally, I'm reminded of a cross between Dave Walker from Harvest and Jayson from Where Eagles Dare (if you haven't heard them, go and check them out). The CD is a short one at only 4 songs but it makes for a good listen and well worth your time to check them out.
The layout and artwork was done by one of my favorites, Raf Wechterowicz, though Im not quite sure what the cover of the record means. Maybe I'm missing something...I dig it though. The band also includes a short paragraph proclaiming their choice of veganism. The band is from Europe and released this record through Take It Back Records/Start A Fire Records (who just signed Unrest, one of my current favorites), which are both European labels, so it may be a little difficult to find this release in the US but request at your local indie store or order direct from the band at their Big Cartel store. Get this at all costs, one of the best of 2010.

Let me preface this by saying I'm sorry to Distressed for taking so long to get this review written. The last few months have been quite hectic for me and Im trying to make up for all the people who have requested anything for the blog.
That said, let's get down to business. Distressed from Santa Cruz, CA. are a relatively new band who play hardcore in that 90s Chokehold/Unbroken vein that I love so much. The recent influx of bands who are influenced by bands like Chokehold and Unbroken are becoming more and more recognizable and I think its just a matter of time before this style really breaks through into the major hardcore circles. At just 5 songs, I feel cheated because I want to hear more from them. The recording of the demo is excellent, nice and crisp. All the instruments can be distinguished from each other, the guitars are nice and loud but not overpowering. The bass...as a guitar player, bass is not something I pick up right away. Its just not, I tend to notice the gutar sound first. But the bass sound and tone on the demo is HUGE. Nice and loud, thick and distorted. Its kind of up there with the bass sound that Buske had on the Santa Sangre fu
ll length (seriously one of my favorites). Having been a part of the hardcore scene for so many years now, I've gotten to a point where if the vocalist of a band does nothing for me, then I just won't be able to get into the band. Does that make me an elitist? I don't think it does, just picky. That said, I really like the vocals. Harsh screaming vocals with the occasional spoken word part. Definitely into it.
The layout is one of my favorite parts of any musical format be it CD, tape, or vinyl. Generally you can tell what kind of effort a band put into their release (or demo in this case) by perusing through the layout. While it is a demo, I don't expect a band to have a full color layout (it is nice to see though) or the disc to be factory pressed but in the case of Distressed, they went back to the 90s for a little influence. Silk screening both the cover and the disc was a nice idea but the lyric sheet is what really got my attention. A booklet hand tied with twine to hold the pages together. If you have seen the Morning Again "My Statement Of Life In A Dying World" 7 inch layout we posted, you'll have an idea of what I mean. Lyrically, the band deals mainly with animal rights and liberation. Each song is printed on one side of the page and the other is an explanation of what the song is about. I like to make my own interpretations of what the lyricist is writing about but I like even more to see what they really meant with the explanation included.
Overall, I'm expecting big things from this band. They have a 5 week tour booked with Contend as well as a 10 inch in the works. Oh did I mention that the demo has a Chokehold cover? Well now you know. Don't sleep on this band, I'm expecting big things from these guys. The band also included a link to download the 5 song demo so do yourself a favor and do so.

As mentioned in a post last year, I love ATL's Foundation. Awesome dudes who love the core and tour their asses off finally get the recognition they deserve by signing with Bridge 9 Records. Here's a statement from Bridge 9:
Things are busy here at Bridge Nine Records and we are more than excited to announce another addition to our roster - Atlanta's straight edge hardcore stalwarts Foundation. No strangers to to the road, Foundation has been seen on tour all over the country; most notably with Bane and on Have Heart's final string of shows last Fall. B9 Owner Chris Wrenn said, "We couldn't be happier to sign Foundation - these guys have been working hard over the last few years and officially caught our attention last summer when we were all blown away by their live show. It's important for us as a label to have a solid, straight edge hardcore band and Foundation is the best band in that genre right now. Champion and Have Heart did great things for Bridge Nine in the past decade and after their demise we are excited to pass the torch over to Foundation."
Foundation will be gearing up for a full US tour in May and June alongside Backtrack and Rotting Out before they head to the studio to record their Bridge Nine Records debut. With two releases under their belt (Hang Your Head 7" and S/T 7" on Six Feet Under Records) and influences such as Unbroken and Buried Alive, Foundation's first proper full-length is sure to be one of the best straight-forward hardcore records of the year. Drummer Champ Hammett said, "We can't wait to finish and record the new LP and tour non-stop - we want to hit all the fests and cover the US, hopefully Europe and other parts of the world. Get ready to see us everywhere in 2010 and beyond."
You check out some tunes on their Myspace page. Congrats to my dudes.

When I first heard of Abandon, Justin told me there was a video of them covering Morning Again's "Stones". Obviously, I was extremely excited. I watched the video and was impressed. I later found out the band was relatively young (their ages) and that they could actually play their instruments. It was refreshing to hear a group of young people who fell in love with the 90s hardcore sound and were able to put a fresh take on it. I ordered the demo directly from the band which took some time to show but it was worth it.I messaged the band to tell them that I was into it and that I would do a review for it. Fast forward 7-8 months and I received an email from Francisco asking if I'd like to review the full length. Of course, I said
yes.
The record opens with "Walls" which has some serious Unbroken worship (Life.Love.Regret era) with its chugging riffs as well as some Seven Generations influence. I like that bands draw influence from their contemporaries and 7 Gen had a big influence on the current scene. "To Defy" opens with a choral march. It sounds like something you would have heard during WWII...is it? Possibly but I dont have the liner notes. The chorus is swallowed up by a tribal beat and chugging riff followed by a slower, half time feel. When the band does play fast, Im glad the drummer knows how the play the fast beat correctly. To me, there is a right way and a wrong way and he pulls it off quite well.
2 of the songs are re-recorded from their demo and they greatly benefit from the top notch production. Everything is leveled perfectly and nothing seems to overpower. Being a guitar player, I have always noticed guitar tone (and the tone on this record is great) but the bass tone is what gets me. SO HEAVY. It reminds me a lot of how Buske's tone on the Santa Sangre record sounds. Lyrically, I was given a copy of the lyric sheet but to be honest, as Im getting older, Im finding it harder and harder to pick up the subtleties and hidden meanings in songs. The lyrics are well written and thought out though dealing with personal issues as well as straight edge and veganism.
Overall, Im extremely happy with the record. I preordered it through Catalyst Records and am anxiously awaiting it to come in the mail. Pick this and go see this band if they play near you. One to watch in 2010.

2 weeks ago my friend Sean from the band Regret wrote me to tell me that his band had just recorded a new EP. Well I slacked and am finally getting this posted for them. Sorry it took so long Sean. Not sure of whom will be releasing the record so I was given the go ahead to post the songs as downloads for the time being. Not sure when they will be unavailable so get em while you can.
