Here we are with part 3 of our coverage on current bands playing 90s style hardcore. As stated before, I plan to continue doing these so if you have a band or know a band that should be mentioned here, shoot us an email at xstuckinthepastx@gmail.com

Monument To Thieves - Southern California
I was extremely excited when this band was announced...members of Throwdown and Force of Change playing Disembodied influenced hardcore. Sign me up. Super heavy. They have a 7 inch coming out and a rumored split 7 inch with Disembodied as well in the works. As of right now, just local area shows have been announced but Im hoping for a full US tour. Check their Myspace for more info.
You can order tshirts from Monument To Thieves here: Monument To Thieves

Mourningside - Orange County, CAMourningside sent us an email asking us to check out their band and needless to say I was pretty blown away. Mean Season influenced hardcore that if you were to hear it and not be told they were a new band, you'd swear that New Age released them in 1994. They just recorded a demo which can be downloaded for free on their Myspace. Im expecting big things from this band in the future so be prepared.

Meantime - Daytona Beach, Florida
Meantime is one of my favorite newer bands. Real intense hardcore that at times has a bit of an Integrity feel. Since they started they have toured as often as possible and just released a split with Atlanta's Foundation. I was told they are planning on touring this summer so if they come to your town make sure to go out and see them. Another band that is going to be big in my opinion.
You can order their split with Foundation here: Ghetto Josh Records
You can order their self titled 7 inch as well as tshirts here: Double Or Nothing Records

Crystal Lake - Tokyo, Japan

Crystal Lake plays heavy hardcore that at times reminds me of older Poison The Well (without the clean vocals) but at other times reminds me of Morning Again and Arkangel. For some reason they have gotten little exposure over here but hopefully that will change soon. They recently played the Taste of Chaos tour in Japan and are in the studio writing a new rccord.
You can order their full length as well their splits here: Crystal Lake

Withdrawl - Winipeg, Manitoba, Canada
Withdrawl reminds me so much of Buried Alive. To me, this is a good thing since BA is one of the best bands to ever walk the Earth. Withdrawl is currently on tour right now and getting ready to release a 7 inch called "Unknown Misery" this summer. Real fast and heavy.
Check out the Withdrawl Myspace for upcoming dates: Withdrawl on Myspace

Foundation - Atlanta, GA

Foundation has been playing out and touring regularly for a few years now and are definately one of the best bands out there right now. At times, Im reminded of Trial and Integrity but they are able to make the sound their own. They just released a split with Meantime as well as a release on Triple B Records.
You can order their split with Meantime here: Ghetto Josh Records
You can order their self titled 7 inch here: Triple B Records

Something I have learned in my years of being active in the hardcore scene is that there are two types of bands: bands who establish themselves, break up, start a new band and ride the wave of popularity that an "ex members of..." band generates and then there are the bands who go out, play their hearts out and gain a following from that. Mourningside AD is the latter. If you guys read my review of their demo, you know I was nuts about it. A band that reminded me of Mean Season, had very personal and introspective lyrics, and did not try and use any type of "ex members of..." publicity. I messaged Damon (vocalist) and asked if the band would be interested in having us do a review of the record. He responded and a link was sent. He also explained that the band had to change its name by adding the AD because there was already a band with the same name, though broken up, and they asked them to change it (shades of American Night...er...Give Up The Ghost). I put the tracks on my iPod and listened as I walked to class. The new 7 inch, Confessions of Disbelief" is a huge leap forward for the band in terms of musical progression, recording, and overall maturation. On the demo, I heard alot of influence from Mean Season (hey not that thats a bad thing, they do take their name from a MS song) but they have added influences from Unbroken, Snapcase, Groundwork, and 108. The vocals are very reminiscent of "Life Love Regret" era Unbroken and there is plenty of the 90s style clean vocals. Lyrics deal with personal issues while the song "Clear" (re-reorded from their demo) seems to attack religion with lyrics such as "Selling the world salvation, your lies are crystal clear for all to see who choose to see". To my understanding the band is not a straight edge band (they do contain members who are) and the song "Life Deceived" does seem to carry a very strong drug free message (unless Im misinterpreting it) by stating "Liberation must be gained. Until we're free. I will abstain". The recording overall is top with all instruments at the appropriate levels, nothing seems to be too high or too low. The guitar tone is warm and heavy but not too muddy, the drums sound full while the bass provides the right amount of low end. Hardpress Records did a great job by asking to release this for the band. The band has been steadily playing out in California since they started and are currently gearing up for a west coast tour in November with dates in California, Washington, and Nevada planned. Overall, the Mourningside AD record is well worth your money and will surely be on my top 10 list as the year comes to a close.

Orange County metalcore throwbacks Mournsingside A.D. are in a bit of a bind.
The band was sharing a practice space with a few other bands. Recently, it was decided that the space was going to be vacated, and every member of the bands needed to remove their equipment. When it came time for Mourningside to remove their drums, they were nowhere to be found.
The other bands have been asked if they know anything, and nobody seems to have an answer.
If you have any information to the drums' whereabouts, please contact letsstarttoday@sbcglobal.net

The future of the band hinges on the retrieval of the drums. Without them, the band will not carry on.

Summer is here (okay it officially starts on the 21st) and that means festivals. Of all the newer festivals in the past few years, its seems like Sound and Fury in Santa Barbara, California has become THE fest to attend on the West Coast (This Is Hardcore on the East, more on that tomorrow). Every year, the lineup just gets better and better with this years lineup being my personal favorite so far. Some great older bands (Outspoken, Strife, Earth Crisis, Sick of It All) and newer ones (Heartsounds, Mourningside AD, Foundation)...overall the fest is going to be solid. When more info becomes available, we'll get it posted but tickets are now available and if you buy a ticket for all 3 days, its only $70. The lineup has been posted but not the times yet.
