On August 26th, 1994, one of my favorite bands in the whole world played their last show. Little did i know that a few years later they would be playing again, but that's neither here nor there.
Outspoken's moniker was fitting. Their music and lyrics embodied an emotional side of hardcore that is rarely seen. I can't imagine where they would have done had they stayed together, but as they say "all good things must come to an end."
Good thing i wasn't asked to write an epitaph for a band at 7am.
Anyway, the members of the band and a few other scene heavyweights wrote up this little zine as a way to say goodbye, and i could only hope that someday, something i created would have such an impact on people to inspire words like these.

I was at this show and I remember it very well, primarily because I hadn't seen a stage that packed with people before in my entire life and I haven't seen one since either. The image of all those kids on stage with the band is, for lack of better words and at the risk of sounding incredibly cheesy, indelibly etched in my mind.

This was my first OC show. I had been going to mostly punk (and, of course, ska-core) shows in Riverside for a couple of years. Riverside had no hardcore bands at the time. John Kelly, from Entity and Palefire, moved to Riverside and went to my high school. He invited me and a few friends to see his band play with XCHORUSX, mean season and Strife at the Live Oak in South Corona. It was rowdy, people were throwing rocks at bikers, and i fell in love with hardcore shows. I especially loved the strong 'zine culture at the time.
When I heard about the last Outspoken show i begged everyone i know for a ride. the girl that finally gave in flaked on me last minute. I had just turned 16 and my dad would not let me borrow the car to drive all the way to Fullerton. I begged and he eventually drove me to the show and took my little sister to Knott's while he waited for me. Anyone who says the OC scene had no soul is flat out wrong. This show was amazing and changed my life.
