Your '90s hardcore documentary ORANGE COUNTY HARDCORE SCENESTER (OCHS) recently had it's world premiere screening on 4/16/11 in Örebro, Sweden. Have you gotten any feedback of any kind on that screening?

Yes! I heard that it went well. It played with two bands. Basically, I heard that some people were just there for the bands, some people were really into the movie and some people sat through the movie waiting for the bands. Documentary films have long lives. They come out and are usually discovered after they have been out for a bit. It is only in recent years that documentary films have been given so much support but even those supported films still have to fight tooth and nail for their audience. I watched ANOTHER STATE OF MIND in 1986, I believe. It came out in 1984, so you see what I mean. That movie, the DECLINE OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION series, AMERICAN HARDCORE, LET THEM KNOW... they have really set the standard. I am just happy to have people see OCHS and hopefully, they like it.

Discuss the other upcoming OCHS screenings (locations, dates, times, etc.).

The documentary is playing at Conne Island in Germany and Estonia on May 11. And then, over the summer, I believe it is playing a festival in Philadelphia, Hungary, Fluff Fest, Seattle and hopefully more places after that. I haven't even begun to submit it to distributors yet. That will be a long process. I haven't started submitting it to film festivals either. Again, that process will be long. I do know that I will be submitting it to Sundance and Slamdance, among others. It will have a tough time getting into those, mainly because those festivals are very political in terms of what gets in. I am just hoping that OCHS is unique enough that people like it and maybe that will help it's chances.

However, if you live in California, particularly Orange County, the screening to go to is the free one that I have set up at The Yost Theater in Santa Ana on May 12. It is FREE and it will play at 7:30 PM. I have been posting about it on Facebook. I flyered record stores. Now, I need to keep the momentum going. Basically, I wanted to make the screening easy for people so that anybody in the area could come. It is free, it is local, it is on a Thursday and you will be home early!

Discuss the upcoming OCHS DVD. In particular, what kinds of extras will be included on it and what's the tentative release date?

I can't really discuss the DVD because it is too far off. This is something that I have been trying to explain. It isn't that I made the film and didn't want people to see it or review it. Basically, I go through this process with every film that I make. I make it and I show it around hoping to land a bigger distribution company. If that doesn't happen, I release it myself. This takes time because filmmaking is a very aggressive hobby for me. I don't make a living off of these films. I work another job and I supplement my income doing freelance writing/digital editing work. Basically, in about a year to 18 months, this movie will have been seen by a lot of people in one way or another. Then, it will be re-edited with notes that I've made and gotten from others. Then, the DVD will either come out through me or another company.


Discuss the upcoming OCHS merch. Will there be an accompanying soundtrack and/or book of some sort?

Right now, all I have planned are shirts that are rips of popular shirts from hardcore bands of the '90s. I'd love to do a book and a soundtrack. LET THEM KNOW, the BYO documentary, was released that way and it's fantastic! Again, this all depends on if little ol' me releases it via Anhedenia Films or if it comes out from a bigger company that can make a package like that happen.

You used the music of Iceburn/The Iceburn Collective as the entire soundtrack for your 1999 mockumentary SCHUSTERMAN LEVINE: A BOXING FABLE. Why did you decide on that particular band for the soundtrack to that film?

I needed music! Also, I needed good music and I didn't want anything where people were singing. I have known Gentry, Cache and those guys since 1994. I was always impressed with the fact that Iceburn really did do their own thing. Who else was writing 20 minute songs in the hardcore scene and playing hardcore shows in the '90s??? And it wasn't just writing lengthy songs to write lengthy songs. Iceburn were musicians. They are the kinds of people that could play with anyone. You have to appreciate a band that can play orchestral type music and then merge that with Black Sabbath. Their music ended up suiting the film perfectly and giving it a dreamy quality which I think really lent something to the whole fairy tale/Chaplinesque feeling that I was going for when I made the film.

On a non-hardcore related note, a movie entitled KNOCKOUT that you wrote the screenplay for and which stars "Stone Cold" Steve Austin was just released today on DVD and Blu-ray. Briefly discuss that.

I love this movie! Anne Wheeler, Stone Cold, Daniel Magder and the Nasser Production Company did a great job on this movie. I am not just saying that to sell more copies because I don't have any piece of the backend. I am telling people to see this movie because I think that the message is great. It's a kids' film but there's something there for adults as well. When I wrote it, I imagined it as an Afterschool Special from the '80s and that is what it is. In the film, a young kid (Magder), who loves boxing, is getting picked on. He convinces the school janitor (Austin) to train him and together, they show everyone what they're made of. It is a very simple story but it doesn't end how you think it will. Also, being as how I'm a huge boxing fan, it is filled with references that new and old fans will really appreciate. I am really proud of this film. And this movie is hardcore related. Maybe not in a music sense but I think the idea of a kid not taking "no" for an answer is something that is very much in keeping with hardcore.

At present, I am writing a bunch more spec screenplays. I just completed one titled THAT GUY about a guy who would rather fantasize about life than actually have a life. I am working on another young adult fiction book called JD about an "at risk" youth whose life gets upended when his Grandpa comes to live with him and his mom. Once that is done, I am doing another animated movie called INSECT. It is about two brothers who discover that there is a giant insect living in their dead mother's bedroom. It is a mix between PHANTASM and THE GATE. Lastly, I am working with Nasser Productions on a bunch of scripts. It looks like another one is getting made this summer. There is a director and a star in place. Once I know more, you will too!

Eleventh Hour - Sifting Through The Ashes 7"

For the longest time, I was never able to find any information about Eleventh Hour, aside from the knowledge that they were from Flint, Texas and that they played with the likes of Chokehold, Despair, Unbroken, Mean Season and more. And I only knew that information because it was in the liner notes to their "Sifting Through The Ashes" 7". However, I was about to rip this record this morning, and I did a google search for the first time in a long while, which yielded what I assume to be a somewhat newer Facebook page for the band. It detailed that they actually did some touring with Chokehold, played a couple of reunion shows in 2002, AND that they recorded two new songs (which I'm dying to hear!) in 2008.

The following 7" was actually their demo recording from December of 1993 that got released on vinyl in April of 1994 as a split release between Ballyhoo Withdrawal and Threshold Records, who released the "Faction" 7" from Botch soon after.

Purification: New Logo, New Record Artwork and South American Tour

Mike Bird: Buffalo Kid Who Needs Your Help

If there is one thing I've learned through my years of being a part of the hardcore scene, we watch out for our own. Well, we need your help. Reposted from "The Kids Still Have Their Say":


On the evening of Thursday, April 14th 2011 the Buffalo hardcore community gathered at Mohawk Place to support Terror and Trapped Under Ice as they took the stage to play a show.

With plenty of pile-on's, stage-diving, sing-along's and an incredible vibe of unity and energy, the show got off to an awesome start.

However, what began as a good-old hardcore show ended in a tragic incident that has forever altered the life of one of Buffalo hardcore's very own members.

MIKE BIRD, regular show-goer, hardcore kid, and a member of the Buffalo Straight Edge community, was knocked to the ground by a stage-diver. Hitting his back and head on the concrete floor, Mike had to be rushed to the hospital via ambulance to be treated for his injuries. Unable to move his limbs, or feel any pain in his lower-body, Mike received emergency spinal surgery for his injuries.
The official diagnosis indicates that Mike broke the C5 and C6 vertebrae in his lower spine. With no feeling in his legs, it is unclear how soon 19-year old Mike will regain use of his lower body and be able to walk (or mosh) again.

Without the luxury of being able to afford his own health insurance coverage, this injury is crippling financially as well.
An ambulance ride, emergency room visit, sophisticated spinal surgery, X-Rays, physical therapy, and medication leaves Mike Bird with a medical bill that will most-likely amount to a six-figure sum. His lack of insurance and limited mobility will make paying this debt an impossible task.

The Buffalo hardcore community is banding together, pooling our collective resources and organizing benefit events to help offset Mike Bird's medical bills.

WE NEED YOUR HELP.

The community aspect of hardcore is something that transcends the boundaries of cities, crews, cliques, scenes, and sub-genres.
We are ALL hardcore kids; we're all cut from the same cloth.
We ALL go to shows, we ALL stage dive, and we've ALL had our share of mishaps.

It could have been any one of us in Mike Bird's shoes.
He just happened to draw the short straw that night and get knocked down.
But as we all know, when someone gets knocked down in hardcore, we PICK THEM BACK UP.

Several benefit events are being organized within the Buffalo scene as we speak.
I'm told that both Terror and Trapped Under Ice are both on-board for a special merch-run related to this incident.

Foundation: New Record and Record Release Show Info

Atlanta's straight edge torchbearers, Foundation, are releasing their brand new full length "When The Smoke Clears" on Bridge 9 Records May 3rd. Preorders launched last week and will be shipping soon. Prohaska - Cordoba Achtundneunzig 7"

Here's a 7" that pays tribute to a particular football match (aka soccer). Prohaska was a screamo band from Austria in the '90s. Their 'Cordoba Achtundneunzig' 7" is their only release that I'm aware of, besides appearances on a few compilations. It was released on Paracelsius Underground Industries & Charon Collective in 1998. As mentioned, it deals with a particular football match from the 1978 World Championships, played in Córdoba, Argentina, between West-Germany (the reigning World Champion at that time) and Austria. Austria defeated West-Germany 3-2, which was quite a surprise victory, and what makes this a legendary match in Austria. It was the first victory of Austria over West-Germany in 47 years, and is also referred to as 'the miracle of Córdoba'. Hans Krankl, one of the best Austrian football players ever, scored the 3rd, and decisive, goal in the last minute or so of the match. Another football player from that team, Herbert Prohaska, provided the band with their name, he is also pictured on the sleeve. As said, this 7" deals with that match, both lyrically and by adding a bunch of samples from (Austrian) commentary of that match.

Because there are samples overlapping the songs, I decided to rip this 7" into 2 files, one for each side, rather than a file per track.

Classic Records: Sick Of It All - Just Look Around

While we here at Stuck In The Past enjoy our fair share of chugga chugga vegan metal hardcore, you might find it interesting to know that my (Chip) all-time favorite hardcore record sounds nothing like any of the regular stuff we post. For me, there is no hardcore record as angry and real as Sick Of It All's "Just Look Around". Being that the band just celebrated their 25th anniversary, I felt it fitting to take a look back at what I consider the finest hardcore record ever written.
This is the last record the band released with original bass player Richie Cipriano and the second of two records released by Relativity Records. At the time, the band had already been around about 6 years, gone through a major line up shift (Richie and Arman left and were replaced by Eddie and E.K. only to come back before the recording of this) and the cry of "sell out" began to seep in when they signed to Relativity. I feel like the band used this to fuel the anger in the music and the lyrics for this record. The record starts off with "We Want The Truth" which took off right out of the gate. The band didn't start off with some stomp type intro, just straight forward fast hardcore, set to grab you by the balls and say "hey we're still here and we're pissed off". I remember reading somewhere (possibly in Hardware zine) that Pete and Lou felt like they couldn't write when Eddie and E.K. were in the band. If that's the case, bringing Richie and Arman back into the band made a world of difference because they took one of the only songs that Eddie and E.K. recorded on (We Stand Alone) and made it even better. Now, I gotta say that "We Stand Alone" is my favorite hardcore song EVER. The original is a banger but the re-recorded version added a breakdown and sing-a-long to the end. I remember reading the lyrics for the first time and just felt how angry they seemed at their friends turning their backs on them and how they didn't care ("First you said we hated to much now you say we just can't hate enough, now you're screaming that we've changed we've grown up but our beliefs are still the same, it's still an outlet for anger and strife but one more thing, it's also our life"). Words like these really stuck with me and made me re-evaluate how I viewed bands who were gaining popularity. They also re-recorded "What's Goin On" from the We Stand Alone EP. Lyrical content dealt with government cover ups (We Want The Truth), the constant day to day grind of working a 9 to 5 job (Locomotive), the AIDS epidemic (Indust.) and the brushing off of being called "sell outs" (We Stand Alone). The band also chose to tackle love with the song "The Shield" (at least that's what I interpreted it as) stating "lowered my shield, now i'm not protected I never used to let it down". This was something different from your average NYHC band, Sick Of It All were setting themselves apart. The band also went a different route by collaborating with hip-hop group House Of Pain for a remix of the title track, a track that wouldn't see the light of day until it was released on "Outtakes For The Outcast".
I could really sit here and go on forever about the greatness of this record but it really feels like the outcast in their catalog. The band really plays very little from the record live anymore it seems except on special occasions so when the band does play a song live (other than the title track), I consider it a privilege. The record is still available and could really go for a remaster to bring it back to its glory. Also, as a companion to this record, check out "Live In A World Full Of Hate", a live record released by Lost & Found Records in 1993. Craig had already joined the band but they bust through just about every song they had at the time including Minor Threat's "Betray". Though I wasn't a part of the hardcore scene when this record came out in 1992, I still look upon this record as the turning point for me, leading me to something bigger and better.

It Follows blog (LOTS of '90s hardcore downloads and content)

A really good and extremely active new blog as of late is It Follows. It's creator, Jon Huskey, was the guy behind the equally excellent What We Want We Must Create blog. If '90s hardcore downloads and content are your thing (and we suspect that they are), you should definitely bookmark It Follows and check it out daily. Additionally, Huskey has a Limited Pressing page with LOTS of hardcore/punk/indie vinyl and other collectibles available for sale and trade, so be sure to check that out as well.

Raindance (Outrage) 7" pre-order and review

Review:
Fresh off a name change from Outrage to Raindance, this new 7" feels like a good way for the band to establish both a new name and a new expansion of their old sound. I was a fan of the Outrage material on Panic Records, but I think they've really outdone their previous material and previous name with this new 7" titled "Love Under The Sun" on Glory Kid Records. The thing I seem to like most about Raindance is that they continue to evolve with each release, and this new 7" is certainly no exception. They've maintained the heavy tone of previous releases, which includes a nice helping of staccato breakdowns reminiscent of 90s luminaries like Harvest and Unbroken, but they've now also brought a bit more melody into the fold. That melody includes the use of clean vocals, which at one moment can be compared to early Poison The Well, and at the next sounds more on the verge of Starkweather. The standout for me is the combination of "Severed Wings and Open Hands" parts 1 and 2 on side B, which flows together very well, and leaves me wanting to hear how the band will evolve yet again for their next release.
